Top of Isafjardardjup Bay

Starting from: Ísafjörður, Súðavík
Season: 21st Jun-10th Sep
Duration: 5-6 hours
Difficulty: 3.5/5
Minimum age: 12 years old

At 856m the Sauratindar peaks are the highest point along the beautiful Isafjardardjup bay.

Available on request every day 11th June-10th September, starting from Isafjordur or Sudavik. Please note that advance booking on a specific date is required but we try and pick the best timing for the hike in terms of weather.

We meet outside the Arctic Fox centre in Sudavik at 10:00, or you can meet us at 9:30 at our office in Isafjordur.

From Sudavik we ascend up the wild mountainslope of Sauratindar where there are no signs of a hiking trail. The first part of the hike is the most demanding so we usually start slow and easy to let everyone warm up, and stop for a brief pause or two to enjoy the amazing views down onto Sudavik village and Vigur island.

Once we have ascended a few hundred meters we find a "hidden" trail - faint but clear - via Tradargil canyon that is the only easy route to the top plateau of Sauratindar. From the plateau we enjoy spectacular panoramic views over Isafjardardjup bay, including Hornstrandir and the Drangajokull glacier. And from the very top one can catch a distant glimpse of the highest mountain in the Westfjords, Kaldbakur.

Early in the summer the trail and top plateau are largely snow covered, whereas late in the summer delicious bilberries, blueberries and crowberries become ripe for picking.
