Starting from: Ísafjörður, Reykjavík
Season: 1st Jul-31st Aug
Duration: 9-10 hours from Ísafjörður
Difficulty: 3/5
Minimum age: 12 years old
Min: 2 pax and Max: 5 pax

A fantastic combination: Trek to Kaldbakur mountain and go under the Svalvogar cliffs! Experience a unique & stunningly beautiful part of the Westfjords which most travellers miss out on.

The duration is about 9-10 hours from Ísafjörður with a flexible departure time (if there is sufficient daylight we can also do early morning, late afternoon & evening hours). Please note that we need a calm & clear day because of the higher altitudes involved, so it's helpful to have an extra day or two as backup.

This tour can also be booked as a day tour from Reykjavik, and you can select the option to book flights and the corresponding airport transfers in Reykjavik and Isafjordur as an extra upon booking.

Available as a private tour for the price of 4 participants.

We travel by super jeep from Ísafjörður. It takes us about an hour to reach the start point of the legendary trail of the Svalvogar peninsula, characterised by sharp cliffs and fantastic views at every corner. From there on we follow this amazing route at a slow and steady pace, with opportunities to hike along the trail and stop along the way as per your wishes.

Once we've completed our journey under the cliffs then we'll drive up the valley of Fossdalur, to the base of Kaldbakur mountain which at 998m is the highest peak in the Westfjords and on a clear day offers spectacular panoramic views over most of the peninsula. The hike to the top takes about 2-3 hours and is suitable for anyone in average to good physical shape.

Once we're down from Kaldbakur we'll cross the Álftamýrarheiði mountain pass and enjoy impressive views of the massive culminated crater peaks dotting the way back down Kirkjubolsdalur valley, from where we'll reach Þingeyri village. If there is time at the end of the day then we'll stop for some optional refreshments in Þingeyri, or perhaps a quick de-tour up the trail to the small Sandafell mountain, which will give us a great viewpoint of over the Dýrafjörður fjord and the peak of Kaldbakur.
